Juneteenth commemorates the freeing of slaves, who in Galveston, Texas did not get this news until June 19^th approximately two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.  This is now celebrated as a national holiday that commemorates togetherness and group progress at gatherings across the country.
